Apple today announced the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro powered by the all-new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, representing a major leap in professional laptop performance.

Built on Apple’s Fusion Architecture, these chips combine two high-efficiency dies into a single system on a chip (SoC). The design features world-leading CPU cores, scalable GPUs with Neural Accelerators, high-bandwidth unified memory, an advanced Media Engine, and integrated Thunderbolt 5.

The result is up to 4× AI performance over the previous generation and up to 8× AI performance over M1 models, enabling developers, AI researchers, and creative professionals to unlock entirely new workflows directly on device.

Fusion Architecture — Dual Dies, Single Powerhouse

The M5 Pro and M5 Max leverage two 3-nanometer dies connected through ultra-high-bandwidth interconnects.

Each die includes:

  • 18-core CPU with 6 Super Cores and 12 performance cores
  • Scalable GPU with up to 40 cores and integrated Neural Accelerators
  • High-bandwidth unified memory controller
  • Media Engine supporting AV1 decode, H.264/HEVC, and ProRes encode/decode
  • Integrated Thunderbolt 5 controllers
  • 16-core Neural Engine for high-performance AI workloads

This design allows minimal latency and extremely high throughput for both CPU-intensive and GPU-heavy workloads.

CPU Performance — Fastest Cores in a MacBook

Both the M5 Pro and M5 Max feature Apple’s fastest CPU cores ever built, optimized for both single-thread performance and multithreaded efficiency.

  • 6 Super Cores delivering the highest performance Apple has produced in a laptop chip
  • 12 Performance Cores optimized for sustained multithreaded workloads
  • Up to 30% faster CPU performance vs M4 Pro/Max
  • Up to 2.5× faster multithreaded performance vs M1 Pro/Max

This combination enables seamless handling of demanding tasks such as:

  • Compiling large codebases in Xcode
  • Running scientific simulations and STEM workloads
  • Processing large photo libraries in Lightroom or Photoshop
